Computer Safety and Care
Learn safe physical handling, electrical precautions, cleaning, posture, privacy and basic digital safety before moving into practical computer operation. You need 80% or higher on the mastery test to unlock the next lesson.
1. Protect yourself first
Use a stable surface. Keep cables organized so nobody trips. Keep liquids away from electrical equipment. Do not touch electrical plugs with wet hands. If you notice smoke, burning smell, sparks or damaged electrical equipment, stop using it and seek qualified help.
2. Protect the computer
Keep vents clear so heat can escape. Do not block a laptop’s cooling openings with clothing or bedding. Avoid dropping the device. Close a laptop by holding the display from the correct edges rather than pressing on the screen.
3. Cleaning
Turn the device off before cleaning when practical. Use a soft, appropriate cloth for external surfaces. Do not spray liquid directly into ports, the keyboard or the screen. Do not use excessive force.
4. Ergonomics
Sit with your back supported and place the screen at a comfortable viewing height. Keep wrists relaxed and avoid pressing keys harder than necessary. Take regular breaks during long sessions and look away from the screen periodically.
5. Protect accounts and information
Use a strong, unique password or passphrase. Do not share passwords. Lock the computer when stepping away: on Windows, press Windows key + L. Be careful with unexpected links, downloads and requests for private information.
6. Safe shutdown
When you are finished, save your work. Close programs when appropriate. Use the operating system’s Shut down command rather than simply pulling the power cable. Wait until the computer has fully shut down before disconnecting equipment when required.
7. Emergency and problem response
If the computer freezes, do not immediately hit random keys. Wait briefly, observe whether it responds, and try a safe recovery step such as closing the unresponsive program. If there is a safety issue such as smoke or sparks, stop and disconnect power only if it is safe to do so, then get qualified assistance.
8. Practice task
Demonstrate a safe workstation: organize the cable area, identify the ventilation openings, lock the computer, clean the outside safely, and describe what you would do if you smelled burning from the computer.
